Safe Chemicals Act Introduced in Congress

On April 14th, Senators Frank Lautenberg, Barbara Boxer, Charles Schumer, Amy Klobuchar and others introduced the Safe Chemicals Act of 2011, to create much needed upgrades on safety standards for chemicals in the U.S. The Toxics Substance Control Act, currently tasked with regulating chemicals, hasn’t been updated since it was adopted 35 years ago, and it has clearly failed to keep toxic chemicals out of our homes, bodies and the environment.

After strong warnings from scientific and medical experts explaining that current policies have failed to limit and regulate dangerous chemicals, the Act has been introduced to take important steps forward. Experts warned that without taking action these chemicals would continue to contribute to diseases such as cancer, learning disabilities, and infertility, and these Senators listened.
