News from the Hill: Sen. Baucus Chosen to Lead Hunting/Fishing Caucus

| | |
Max w/ Sen. NelsonSenator Max Baucus was just tapped to lead the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus, a group of lawmakers who work to improve access for hunters and anglers across the country.

According to Baucus’s website, (www.baucus.senate.gov) he will collaborate with caucus Co-chair, Mike Crapo, (R-ID) to pass legislation that will expand public access for hunting, fishing, and recreation purposes. The Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus consists of both Republican and Democratic senators and representatives who work with sportsmen’s and women’s groups to protect public lands for future generations.

Baucus’ first action as Caucus co-chairman was to introduce the Rural Heritage Conservation Extension Act of 2007 in the Senate. Baucus’ legislation makes permanent a provision passed last year to enable farmers and ranchers to voluntarily place land into conservation easements that help protect wildlife habitat. According to Baucus, farmers and ranchers who make contributions can deduct up to 100 percent of their adjusted gross income and can receive the tax break for up to 15 years.

Senator Baucus states that, “To assure that open space and habitat will be there for future generations, we must help our hard-working farmers and ranchers preserve this precious heritage and their way-of-life. Conservation easements have been tremendously successful in preserving open space and wildlife habitat.”

Baucus plans to form an advisory committee consisting of Montana sportsmen and women to work together with the Sportsmen’s Caucus on ways to protect access to hunting and fishing lands in Montana and across the U.S.
