Global Warming Expert to Speak at MSU
Flannery Named “2007 Australian of the Year”
World-renowned scientist, explorer, and conservationist Tim Flannery will speak about the latest information and science regarding global warming on Monday, March 5th at 7:30 p.m. in MSU's Strand Union Ballrooms.
The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its report in Paris last week, with its strongest warning yet that human activities are causing global warming that may bring more drought, heat waves and rising seas. “These predictions of a rise in global temperatures would be a disaster for all life on earth, resulting in widespread extinction of many species,” Flannery told ABC Radio National regarding the report. “It lays out a sort of middle of the road trajectory, which is alarming enough I can tell you, for this century,” added Flannery.
Flannery's most recent book, The Weather Makers, was published in 2006 and it provides basic theories for current discussion on climate change and global warming. Flannery's book is currently at the center of the international conversation surrounding this topic. It has had a major impact on citizens, senior policy makers, and the heads of corporations from around the world. The Weather Makers has surpassed one million copies sold, making it one of the best selling books ever written about climate change.
The upcoming lecture includes a straightforward and powerful explanation of the connection between global warming, climate change and human activity. “Flannery has a gift for making complex science understandable through a skillful use of imagery and analogy,” said Carmen McSpadden, Director of the MSU Leadership Institute, a sponsor of the lecture. “He hopes to mobilize the attending Montana citizens and students, both personally and politically, to recognize that we are all ‘weather makers’ and that the only choice, both logically and ethically, is to begin to address this problem before it is too late,” added McSpadden. The MSU Leadership Institute is sponsoring the event with the Associated Students of MSU, Montana Committee for the Humanities, MSU Office of the President, and the MSU Parent Family Association.
Last week Flannery was awarded the 2007 Australian of the Year, which is given to one citizen who is a role model for others, who inspire through their achievements, and who challenge Australians to make their own contribution to improving their native continent.
Flannery is director of the South Australian Museum, chairman of the State Science Council and Sustainability Roundtable, and the National Geographic Society's Australasian representative. He spent a year as professor of Australian studies at Harvard. In 2002, he became the first environmentalist to deliver The Australia Day address to the nation, and in 2005 he was honored as Australian Humanist of the Year.
Tickets are $5 and are available beginning February 13th at all TicketsWest locations including www.ticketswest.com, and at the Bobcat Ticket Office. For more information call the MSU Leadership Institute at 994-7275.
