Former Senator John Warner served as U.S. Senator (R-VA) from 1979-2009 and Secretary of the Navy from 1972 - 1974. Senator Warner is one of the nation's most distinguished defense experts and a veteran of two wars. Senator Warner recognizes the need for America to lead our future on these issues of energy, climate, and national security. Senator Warner served in the U.S. Navy during the final years of World War II, in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War, and was the Secretary of the Navy from 1972 to 1974. During his five terms in the U.S. Senate he rose to be Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee and was the longest serving Republican on the Environment and Public Works Committee. In 2006 he joined with Senator Joseph Lieberman (I-CT), to co-sponsor the Climate Security Act, the only climate change bill to be debated by the U.S. Senate. Admiral John B. Nathman, USN (Ret.) served as the 33rd Vice Chief of Naval Operations and most recently commanded all U.S. Fleet Forces from February 2005 until May 2007. His personal decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal (four awards), Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (four awards), Bronze Star with Combat V, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V (two awards) and the Air Force Achievement Medal in addition to numerous campaign and unit awards. Senator John Warner has joined with the Pew Environment Group to work with state and municipal governments, the Obama Administration, local organizations, and military, security and climate experts in select U.S. cities to address the climate-security nexus.
The Pew Project on National Security, Energy and Climate is an initiative of the Pew Environment Group and is dedicated to highlighting the critical links between national security, energy independence, the economy, and climate change. The Pew Project is bringing together science and military experts to examine new strategies for combating climate change, protecting our national security, increasing our energy independence, and preserving our nation's natural resources.
