MT Voter Registration "Second Chance" Secret?

Billings, MT - One door closes and another one opens. Voter registration for the upcoming November 2007 elections ended this week - but the state's new late registration option is open, as well as the opportunity to register on Election Day. Information on how late registration works in Montana can be hard to find, though, according to Theresa Keaveny with the Montana Conservation Voters Education Fund.

Montanans get a second chance...and even a third chance if they missed the regular voter registration window for the upcoming city elections - although many may not know it. Theresa Keaveny with the Montana Conservation Voters Education Fund says residents can register at county election offices, and even register on Election Day November 6th. But she says tracking down the 'where' and 'how' isn't easy because the state, and even some counties, don't publicize the details...

"We're urging counties to make sure they are giving accurate and complete information to voters about the available of late and Election Day registration."

Keaveny says there were glitches with the new options last year, and their organization documented misinformation from several counties.

Keaveny says city elections are often overlooked - yet local elected leaders make decisions that affect day-to-day quality of life in Montana...

"City councils make decisions about transportation, trails, public health, how energy is used, planning & zoning, and how communities will grow and develop." (ENDS)
